Dec 2, 2008 - wow great you replied to my comment i posted ages ago. yes different metals burn different colors if they are the right metals. but Mg and Al burn white like most of them. and the red stuff on matches is a mixture of red phosphorous, charcoal, and potassium chlorate. The only metal in all that is potassium which gives a purple flame but not in the case of matches. So i'm not going to bother explaining more.

Dec 2, 2008 - oh btw this is such a time consuming way of making Al powder. I recommend doing it chemically with magnesium, aluminum and hydrochloric acid. It's very quick and it comes up with very very fine powder. I won't explain it but if your interested there should be instructions on the net.

Dec 2, 2008 - copper burns green/blue,and the stuff on matches if you look closer it burns pinkish, purple because of potassium chlorate, but if it had strontium nitrate it would be a deep red flame,or boric nitrate for green flame

Dec 2, 2008 - Very Pure
DebeoMorium Says:
Dec 2, 2008 - Actually aluminum foil has a great deal of impurity. You wont get any better than 95% purity out of this method.
alucard1892 Says:
Dec 2, 2008 - in chem class i calculated around 83 to 85 percent pure

Dec 2, 2008 - what does the mesh of the powder have to do with anything about it?
o0Dreamlike0o Says:
Dec 2, 2008 - So, the whole idea is: Put aluminium foil in your coffee grinder. Leave the rest please xD
badb0y1300 Says:
Dec 2, 2008 - if u were to light fire and throw AL in it will it turn a different color on fire. or is this just used to make flash powder.
nirvanafan833 Says:
Dec 2, 2008 - the finer the mesh, the faster it reacts with oxygen, so the finer meshes will make better flash powders...
