PAUL - John McCain whipped the crowd into a frenzy as he accepted his party's nomination for president of the United States during the final day of the Republican National Convention here.Referring to his long years of service to the nation, dating back to when he was a POW during the Vietnam War, McCain declared that he will fight for America, "so long as I draw a breath so help me God."And he implored his fellow countrymen to follow his example by standing up to fight for the nation."We're Americans," he said, "and we never give up. We never quit. We never hide from history. We make history."McCain sought to convince voters that there's a clear difference between Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and himself. He said that Obama has his "respect and admiration." But laid down arguments for why voters should cast their ballots for him instead.Some key points:* McCain said he would veto the first pork barrel spending bill that crosses his desk.* He pledged to cut government spending.* He promised to proffer a health care plan that, "will make it easier for Americans to find and keep" health care services without interference from government bureaucrats.* He said he would cut the second highest businesses taxes in the world, which, he argued, would save jobs.* The government, he said, will "help workers who lost a job that won't come back find a new one that won't go away." They would, he said, be financially subsidized during re-training.* He'd reform education. Bad teachers, he said, would be directed to "find another line of work."* He got a particularly enthusiastic response when he said that, under a McCain administration, "we're going to stop spending $700 billion-a-year to countries that don't like us much."* He preached to the choir as well when he addressed energy. "We'll drill new wells off shore," he promised. "And we'll drill them now."
