It's rather perplexing I could find no information at all about this fantastic band. That Irwin Abrams was a violinist and bandleader in the 1920's is the only fact I could retrieve... anyone knows more? Personnel on this hot performance is as follows: Julian Hess, unknown (tp), Louis Harmin (tb), Les Crumbacher, Otto Tucker, James Imberman (reeds), Irwin Abrams (vln, ldr), Joe Venuti (vln), Elliott Jacoby (p), Eddie Lang (g), Albert Smith (tu), Fred Bauer (d), Les Reis (vcl). Recording was made for Okeh on June 17th, 1927.

Nov 18, 2008 - So welcome; a remarkable recording indeed, I wonder who that Abrams was.

Nov 18, 2008 - If I find one of my "Magnolia" copies,I'll upload it as a video response.Always liked that happy song.

Nov 18, 2008 - Always great to hear other versions of this one!

Nov 18, 2008 - Similar arrangement but less pretentious than the famous Whiteman/Crosby version at least equally as good. Great sound.

kspm01 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - I agree; personally I slightly prefer this version. Now if anyone knew who that mysterious Abrams was?

Stompy23 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - I wonder why recordings like this one remained widely unheard. Record purchasers obviously held on to their favorite orchestras (Whiteman etc.), even if little known bands were capable of providing better versions of some songs ...

kspm01 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Probably the s!tuation is like you suggest - people just not adventurous enough to try something new. This version of Magnolia is as least as good as any better known band did.

85scampi Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Nice to hear this. This is the only version I have heard apart from the Kit Kat Band. The vocal is great!!. A real 1920's piece!.

nutsaboutclara Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Boy, that is so true. The well-known bands didn't always produce great versions, but, you can't always expect perfection from ANYTHING, can you?

JoeOliverIsStillKing Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Nice record. I have this by the Clevelanders on Brunswick, also a nice version. Great to hear Joe Venuit and Eddie Lang in there!!Thanks for sharing!

kspm01 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Surprisingly enough, not too many versions of this tune seem available. So glad you liked this one!

kspm01 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Most welcome. I agree The Clevelanders are great too, but of course here the brillant Lang/Venuti solo is particularly outstanding here.

Nov 18, 2008 - Like 85 scampi i know the Kit Kat band version. This is as good and i wasnt expecting it to be!It has very good sound quality, and also good to hear the lyrics.

kspm01 Says:

Nov 18, 2008 - Great you loved this version! Hardly anyone knows this obscure band, so it is a big and pleasant surprise to most listeners - including myself.
