Bovell's thesis: Inerrancy damages young Christian evangelicals. http://www.amazon.com/Inerrancy-Spiritual-Formation-Younger-Evangelicals/dp/1597528617/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1220746397&sr=8-1 1st Argument: (1) "Adopt a Christian [&] Worldview!"(2) WV implies involves coherence.(3) Chr involves non-coherence.(4)WV(5) Chr(6) coherence & non-coherence(7) This causes young Christians to dismiss faith entirely! Why (3)? What about the resurgence of Christian philosophy of religion? There is NO incoherence with these doctrines...http://www.reasonablefaith.org/site/News2?page=NewsArticle&id=5352 Also, if the death/resurrection really is non-coherent, ought we, according to Bovell, dismiss that?2nd Argument:What if this goes on in the Bible1. P, then Q2. P3. Therefore Q...where P is false and Q is true? But I respond in three (actually four) ways: (i) perhaps the tradition is true; (ii) perhaps we can't know one way or another; (iii) even if it's false, does the author believe the false proposition; (iv) if the author believes the false proposition is it really what the author affirms? http://www.amazon.com/Dictionary-New-Testament-Background-Bible/dp/0830817808/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1220746587&sr=8-1 But I do agree that believing in inerrancy is not necessary for one's being a Christian (e.g. C.S. Lewis!!); I also think the intellectual space must be made for younger Christian evangelicals to know that, if they feel the intellectual need, they can believe in errors and still affirm a deeply Christian faith; we should concentrate, however, on equipping Christians to deal with the most detailed and through of criticisms -- we need a thorough philosophy of scripture to interface with contemporary biblical scholarship!
