They are advanced mecha studying david as he is the last mecha on Earth who had contact with humans, thier creator.It was also stated in many interviews that they are advanced mecha.At the beginning of the story, humans create a mecha to fulfill the emotional needs of a human. At the end, mechas create a human to fulfill the emotional needs of a mecha.

If only Kubrick lived long enough to direct this. Though love John Williams music as always and the talking Teddy Bear 'Teddy' is the coolest thing about this movie. Wish they were real boo hoo!
